The SCGA Amateur Championship
The oldest championship conducted by the SCGA, the SCGA Amateur Championship is also one of the nation’s oldest continuously contested amateur championships. Started in 1900 and held every year since, this event crowns the best amateur player of the association. The event is limited to players with handicap indexes of 4.4 and below. Competitors undergo 18 holes of qualifying play in order to reach the final field of 84 players. In the championship, players compete over 72 holes of stroke play, with the top 42 and ties advancing after the first 36 holes. The championship site is traditionally held at the home club of the current SCGA president. There are a number of notable names on the winner’s trophy; the SCGA Amateur has been the first major amateur title for many of golf’s best player.

SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship
This tournament began only three years after the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship debuted. For golfers age 25 and older, the championship allowed post-college amateurs, who fit in golf around work and family, the opportunity to compete in a field not dominated by competitive college players.

SCGA Match Play and Senior Match Play
The SCGA Match Play and Senior Match Play championships began in 2008 as a means of bringing new credence and incentive to the SCGA points program. The SCGA points program awards points to golfers who give strong performances in SCGA, USGA, CGA and other selected outside tournaments. In 2008, specially created Match Play and Senior Match Play Points Lists were developed. The top 32 players on the Match Play Points List plus the top 16 players on the Senior Match Play Points List earn invitations to compete in this elite SCGA championship.

California Golf Association Events
California Amateur Championship
The California State Amateur is one of the nation's oldest state amateur golf championships. The championship originated in 1912 and was held at Pebble Beach Golf Links from 1919 until 2006. In 2007 the CGA broadened the scope of this prestigious championship by rotating the weeklong event to selected courses throughout the state. Included in the event is the Roger Lapham Challenge Cup, a NCGA vs. SCGA team portion of the championship that began its current stroke-play format in 1990.

CGA Senior Amateur Championship
The California Golf Association (CGA) Senior Amateur Championship began in the fall of 1992, and is the state championship for players age 55 and over. The first two tournaments were played at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa. In 1994, the event was moved to Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, and in 1995, a simultaneous NCGA vs. SCGA team portion of the championship was added. Starting in 2010 this 54-hole championship will rotate to selected courses throughout the state.

SCGA Team Play Championships
The first informal Team Play events took place in 1900, and 27 years later, the first formal championship began. As one of the SCGA’s most popular, competitive and longest-running championships, the Team Play list of past champions is a strong one. Teams with asterisks are no longer in existence.

SCGA Parent-Junior Championship
This event, which started in 2007, is open to two-person teams. Both players must be members of the SCGA and have an established index. The junior player must be 17 or under as of the cutoff date. Partners may have more than one generation between them (e.g., a grandfather may play with his grandson or granddaughter, aunts and uncles may play with their nephews and nieces). A total of 120 players (60 teams) participate in 18 holes of modified foursomes (alternate shot). Each partner plays from the tee and then selects one ball to play thereafter. The partner whose drive was not taken plays first on the second shot. That ball is played alternately until the ball is holed. The team will play to 40 percent of their combined course handicap. The field is divided into flights based on combined handicaps of the teams. Gross and Net prizes are awarded.
