The 8th Seaver Cup will get underway Thursday at Rancho La Quinta Country Club as some of this year's top SCGA tournament players will face off against some of the best NCGA competitors in a head to head, two-day battle. This competition was last won by the NCGA in 2011, while the SCGA came-from-behind to win the 2008 contest. The eight-person teams will play the following formats over the two-day event:

Thursday A.M. - Four-Ball Match Play
Thursday P.M. - Foursomes (Alternate Shot)
Friday A.M. - Singles Matches

Three points are available for each match, one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point for the overall match. Any matches that are halved earn a 1/2 point.

The Seaver Cup was created in 1998 at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa as a biennial competition that brings together the best players from Northern and Southern California. The intra-state competition was named in the honor of Charles Seaver, one of the most successful and legendary golfers in California amateur golf lore.

Charlie Seaver is one of two amateurs to hold the NCGA, SCGA and California Amateur titles at the same time, accomplishing this feat in 1933-34 (the other being George Von Elm who pulled out the same feat in 1925). After graduating from Stanford University, Seaver was the shining example of amateur golf in California. Some of his golfing accomplishments included:

·Reaching the semifinals of the 1930 U.S. Amateur

·Member of the 1932 U.S. Walker Cup team

· 1933 California Amateur Champion

· 1932 & 1933 NCGA Amateur Champion

· 1934 SCGA Amateur Champion

· 6-time Fresno City Amateur Champion

· 1949 Northern California Open Champion

· Played in 39 Bing-Crosby Pro-Ams (now known as AT&T)

Seaver’s father served as SCGA president in 1928 and he himself was the NCGA President in 1980. Seaver is also the father of baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver. A charter member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame, Seaver passed on in of all places Pebble Beach in 2004.
