Legendary Southland Course Designer Harbottle III Passes Away

John Harbottle III, an American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) Member and president of John Harbottle Design, died May 24. He was 53.

Harbottle began his professional career in 1984, working on construction and design with the legendary Pete Dye. Throughout his career, he was insprired by natural links courses, and was nationally recognized for his commitment to environmentally-sensitive design. He was responsible for a number of renovation and restoration projects in Southern California, including work on Big Canyon CC, Brookside GC, Hillcrest CC, San Gabriel CC, The Los Angeles CC "North Course" and many more.

“Great courses possess natural beauty, strategic hazards and variety – not only in overall design, but also in the ways to play each hole,” Harbottle said.

Harbottle is survived by his wife, Teresa, and children, Johnny and Chelsea.
