FIRST LOOK AT MIZUNO’S JPX-900 DRIVER

What exactly is it like to swing a $500 driver? Exhilarating. I took Mizuno’s brand-new JPX900 to the range, to put it to the test. But first, I adjusted its settings to those I suspected would optimize my shots. I left the face angle neutral and aligned the center of gravity for a straight flight. Then I jacked up the loft to 11.5 degrees -- the highest it goes -- because I tend to hit tee shots low with my old Titleist 910.

Lining up to hit my first shot, I immediately liked the look at address. The blue clubhead is vibrant, especially when contrasted by the dark face. Then I started swinging. Impact creates a loud, high-pitched, crisp metallic sound that lets you know you hit it on the screws. I loved the higher trajectory. In fact, the driver yielded as much hang time as I’ve ever achieved in any driver. And I'm truly impressed with the liveliness of the landing -- a tall bounce because of the trajectory that seems to transform into a long roll. Every time. I could easily work the ball with my usual draw, yet almost always found my target at the far end of the range.

I’ve already tested several other upcoming drivers for 2017 from various major manufacturers, and consider this model right up there at the top. And while all driver prices are going up, the ones I’ve tried are well worth the investment.
