For just the fifth time in its 105-year existence, the California Amateur Championship will be held in Southern California, beginning Monday, June 20 at Valencia CC. The event gathers the best 156 amateur players in the state and puts them through 36 holes of stroke play before the low 32 competitors advance on to match play.

The Championship truly separates great players from the rest of the pack, as the eventual champion will be put through a grueling six-day, seven-round event. The California Amateur has advanced the careers of past champions such as Jason Gore, Charlie Wi, Mark O’Meara, John Cook and Ken Venturi. It has also hosted a number of the game’s most famous names, who battled but never hoisted the trophy, men such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin and Craig Stadler.

Recently, California’s finest collegiate golfers have dominated the event, as the youngsters have won nine of the last ten playings of the Championship. Notable collegians in this year's field include 2014 U.S. Amateur Champion Gunn Yang of San Diego State, Justin Suh of USC Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine and Hidetoshi Yoshihara, who is fresh off a win at the CIF State Championship and is headed to UCLA to play golf in the fall.

Other notables set to compete include Corby Segal of Santa Clarita, a PGA TOUR caddie who is coming off a phenomenal year that included an SCGA Mid-Amateur win, a victory at the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions and appearances at the U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Amateur Championships, and Tim Hogarth, one of the most accomplished amateur in the region who is also the 1999 California Amateur Champion and 1997 medalist.
