The SCGA J.C. Cunningham Senior Championship will take place this weekend in Long Beach. Historic Recreation Park GC (pictured) and El Dorado Park GC are the venues for the championship, with Recreation Park being played on Saturday and El Dorado Park being played on Sunday. 92 players spread across three flights will compete in individual net stroke play over 36 holes to determine flight winners.
The competition is open to amateurs who are members of a SCGA club and have a current USGA Handicap Index. All participants must be over the age of 50.
A former PLGA championship now in the SCGA fold, the SCGA J.C. Cunningham Championship has been in existence since 1983. The Championship is named after 1950 PLGA President J.C. Cunningham, who also served as president of the Griffith Park Men’s Club and the Los Angeles Municipal Golf Association.
Opened in 1910, Recreation Park meanders through gentle hills near Cal State Long Beach. This Billy Bell design is also known to locals as “Big Rec.” El Dorado Park was opened in 1962 and this Ted Robinson Sr., design is very challenging with tight fairways and penal greens to challenge even the best of players. Both courses are legendary in the Long Beach golf scene and annually host the Long Beach Open.
