For the third time in the last six years, Kathy Kurata of Pasadena earned the victory at the SCGA Women's 36-Hole Stroke Play Championship, carding scores of 79 and 77 at the challenging Saticoy CC en route to a six-shot victory. Her 5-over par 77 on the event's second and final day of play was the low score of the event, which included 44 competitors.

Angela Collins of Glendale, who finished the tournament in ninth place, and Mikie Alpert of Encino, led after Round 1. They opened the event with 6-over par 78s, which paced the leaderboard Monday and bettered Kurata and Mary Budke of Palm Springs by 1 shot. On Tuesday, however, only Kurata and eventual runner-up Ran Oh Keane of Escondido would shoot rounds in the 70s, with Kurata turning in her 77 and Keane carding a 78. Kurata's 36-hole total of 12-over par 156 bested Keane, Colette Rosenberg of Pacific Palisades and Linda Pearson of Glendale, who all finished at 18-over par 162.

In the net flight, Keane earned the victory with a 8-over par 36-hole total of 152. She bested Lake Sherwood's Carolyn Cusick by 3 strokes.

With the gross victory, Kurata earns the Millie Stanley Cup. The trophy is named after Millie Stanley, who played and coached the women's golf team at Long Beach State. Stanley's amateur accomplishments are massive upon her induction: five Long Beach Championships; two Los Angeles Championships; three SoCal Publinx Championships, and eight SoCal senior titles. She has since been inducted into the Long Beach State Hall of Fame. was 47 when she enrolled at Long Beach State. As a member of the 49er golf team, Millie qualified for the national collegiate championships four years in a row. During her last season with the 49ers, Millie served as player-coach, something that would be impossible now, by NCAA rule. Millie coached the 49er women for four years and was chosen Western Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1984. Kurata played alongside Stanley as a member of the 49ers.
