The holiday season is drawing to a close, and you decide to take yourself down to the golf course for 18 hole with the lads (or ladies).
As we all know, or at least should be aware of is the importance of nutrition on the golf course. It is an area of golf that is often overlooked, but you should consider carefully what you are going to take with you.
After the holidays, everyone always opens their fridges to find the shelves crammed with holiday leftovers and there is no better way to use them up than surprise your playing partners with some leftover holiday golfing snacks.
Golf snacks should be nutritious and full of energy releasing foods and the leftovers from Christmas dinner can provide you with some really tasty treats if you just use your imagination.
My personal favorite is an English Christmas favorite, Christmas Cake. A sumptuous mix of dried fruits, a hint of warming brandy and a generous helping of icing make this the almost perfect golfing snack. Why? Because it is crammed full of little bundles of energy, dried fruits are a wonderful snack to take on to the golf course as they are high in energy releasing sugars and proteins. Perfect to maintain energy levels throughout your round.
It is simple to prepare as well simply cut a slice, wrap it and pack it.
If you want to be a little more adventurous why not make a healthy yet extremely tasty sandwich. You have to be careful with sandwiches as the bread is a slow release carbohydrate that can for some people cause an uncomfortable feeling of being bloated, but if you prepare the sandwich with some leftover ingredients then you are on to a winner.
Begin with the leftover turkey, high in protein the meat is a perfect base for the sandwich filling, add a few slices of roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables and a serving of the good old homemade cranberry sauce and you will have a sandwich that will keep you feeling good inside. An alternative to cranberry sauce in a nice thick gravy, almost like a ketchup to add a luxurious taste to your gourmet sandwiches.
Many families buy in fresh fruit for the holidays and nearly always have it left lying around the kitchen, as everyone favoured the more traditional Christmas fayre. Take the opportunity to use the fruit to make a wonderful, energising and nutrient laden smoothie.
Take a handful of your favourite berries, a few slices of apple and throw in some carrots to make a wonderful fruit smoothie, which is not only extremely healthy after all the indulgence over the holiday period but also deliciously refreshing on the golf course.
Of course, there are loads of ways you can use up your Christmas leftovers for snacks to take on the course and they donĀ“t have to be as elaborate as the ideas here. You do though, want to make sure that they are healthy and beneficial to your golf game.
