DON & MARY CARLSON - 2006.

Don Carlson, long-time handicap chairperson and original club delegate at Riviera Country Club, beloved golf ambassador, and a long-time educator, a man whom Peter Jacobsen once dubbed "Mr. Riviera", has passed away on September 28, 2008 just 48 days shy of his 95th birthday. "Although death was expected," said his son, Chris, "we thought we would have another month or two with him. Apparently, he had a previous tee time with Dean Martin, Ben Hogan, and Payne Stewart that we didn't know about."

Don's involvement with the SCGA was multi-faceted. "I cannot recall any other person who has been such a prominent figure in supporting the activities of the SCGA," wrote former SCGA Executive Director Tom Morgan in a letter to Don earlier this year. "You are not only the 'dean' of handicap chairmen with your nearly 40 years of service, but your tenure as a SCGA committeeman was also one of the longest on record. And then to top it all off, you served as Riviera's club delegate from the inception of that important program."

A long-time teacher, Don spent 16 years as the Manual Arts High School basketball and baseball coach (1946-1962) and 11 years as the Hollywood High School basketball and baseball coach (1962-1973).

Services will be held Saturday, October 11, at 1 p.m. at Bel-Air Presbyterian Church (16221 Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90049). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SCGA Foundation (P.O. Box 7186, North Hollywood, CA 91615) or online at www.scgafoundation.org.

"Aside from his involvement in golf, his former occupation was that of a teacher," says his son, Chris. "The mission of the SCGA Foundation is directly in keeping with his principles... education and character development by instilling honesty...integrity...and sportsmanship through the game we all love."
