Robert D. Thomas retires after 25 years as director of communications and FORE editor and publisher

STUDIO CITY, January 22, 2009 Frank Moore has been named director of communications and marketing for the Southern California Golf Association, Katie Denbo has been promoted to editor and publisher of FORE Magazine, the association's award-winning publication, and Teri Silvi has been promoted to the SCGA's assistant director of marketing.

In this newly created position, Moore will lead the association's communications and marketing activities and will create and implement new programs to increase corporate sponsorships and drive business development.

Robert D. Thomas is retiring after more than 25 years as the SCGA's senior director of communications and FORE's editor and publisher.

Moore, 42, a 20-year communications executive, comes to the SCGA after nine years in corporate communications positions with Northrop Grumman Corporation. Most recently, he served as communications director for the company's Information Technology sector. Prior to that, he was director of media relations and director of executive and employee communications in Northrop Grumman's corporate office in Los Angeles.

A graduate of San Diego State University (BA, Journalism, 1988), Moore was also a vice president in Fleishman-Hillard's corporate division in Los Angeles and was vice president of investor relations and corporate communications for Cal Fed Bancorp in Los Angeles.

Denbo, 25, was a United States Golf Association P.J. Boatwright, Jr. intern in 2006 when she was promoted to the SCGA's assistant director of communications and assistant editor of FORE Magazine. In addition to her duties with the magazine, Denbo creates Web sites for all SCGA championships and assists in numerous other communications programs. She is a graduate of Humboldt State University (BA, Journalism and Mass Communications, 2005).

Silvi, 26, was a P.J. Boatwright, Jr. intern in 2006 and was then hired as the SCGA's marketing/communications specialist. In addition to working on the SCGA Web site, Silvi helped craft the SCGA Foundation's new logo and marketing materials and plays an instrumental role in the SCGA's annual Hall of Fame programs. She is a graduate of Winona State University in Minnesota (BA, Marketing, 2005).

"We're excited about what Frank brings to the SCGA," says Kevin Heaney, the association's executive director. "We're moving forward in new and exciting ways to further the golf experience all of our 150,000 members and Frank will be instrumental in helping to develop new programs and opportunities. At the same time, we're pleased that Katie and Teri will be assuming new, expanded responsibilities. They've done a great job and we're glad to be able to recognize that in a tangible way."

When Thomas joined the SCGA in 1983, the association had 90,000 members in 425 member clubs and it published four issues annually of FORE Magazine, one of which included an annual directory. Today, the SCGA has 150,000 members in more than 1,100 clubs in Southern California and Baja California, FORE publishes six times per year and the Southern California Directory of Golf is a 308-page digest-size annual published each January. Altogether, Thomas has edited more than 165 editions of FORE and the directory.

In 1998 and 1999, Thomas wrote a five-part, 100-page history of the SCGA during the association's centennial celebration. He also began the SCGA's Web site in 1996, making it one of the first state/regional golf associations to use what was then still a new form of communication. He has also served for more than a decade as a member of the USGA Communications Committee and continues to handle public relations for the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.

"Bob was passionate about the SCGA and its influence on golf," says Heaney. "His contributions to the SCGA extend beyond the communication effort. Bob worked with staff, board, clubs and members and the industry to promote all aspects of golf. His service to the SCGA was extensive; he will be missed both professionally and personally."
