Major Golf Accomplishments:

  • 2003 U.S. Senior Amateur champion.
  • 2001 U.S. Senior Amateur champion. Defeated Bill Ploeger, 2 and 1, at Norwill Hills CC in St. Louis to win the championship. Kemp and his father, John, became the first father-son combination to win a USGA championship (see “Notes” below).
  • 2001 British Senior Open Amateur champion. Shot 217 for 54 holes at Royal Portrush in Ireland.
  • 1999, 2000 U.S. Senior Open. Low amateur in both events.
  • 1967-78 Pac-10 champion (while attending USC).

    Other Golf Achievements:

  • 2002 California Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship, 2nd, two shots behind Ted Lyford.
  • 2001 SCGA Senior Amateur, T2, three shots behind John Olive.
  • 1968 SCGA Amateur, T2, five shots behind champion Barry Jaeckel at Lakeside Golf Club.
  • 1968 Western Amateur, runner-up. Lost 3 & 1 in championship match to Rik Massengale at Grosse Ile G&CC, Grosse Ile, Mich.
  • 1966 SCGA Amateur, 2nd. Lost playoff to John Jacobs on the third hole at Victoria Club.

    Notes:

  • All-American at USC.
  • Founding member at El Niguel CC.
  • John Richardson was one of just 13 people to win both the SCGA Amateur (1961) and California Amateur (1973), also one of just eight former SCGA Amateur winners who have also captured a USGA championship.
