Senior Match Play Championship
August 3-5, 2020, El Niguel CC
The Senior Match Play Championship began in 2008 as a means of bringing new credence and incentive to the SCGA Senior points list. The SCGA senior points list awards points to golfers who give strong performances in SCGA, USGA, CGA and other selected outside tournaments. This championship field consists of 32 players in single elimination match play. Up to 24 players earn automatic invitations to compete from the Exemption List. The remaining spots into the field are filled through a one day qualifier. Senior Match Play qualifying is open to members 55 and older with a Handicap Index of 9.4 and below and must be current members of the SCGA at the time of registration.
John Mack Takes Home Senior Match Play Title
After five years of competing in the SCGA Senior Match Play and never making it out of the first round, John Mack turned on the burners this year and came away as champion. In the final match, Mack and opponent Greg Moss were even through 13 holes, but Mack pulled away to end the match at 3&2 after winning the final three holes.
“This is so special,” Mack said. “This has been just a great week. Win or lose it’s great, but obviously coming out on top makes things that much sweeter.”
Moss credited his steady putting with his success throughout the week and helping him out when it mattered most.
