SCGA WINS BACK HONORS MATCHES TITLE
In the 6th playing of the biennial Honors Matches, the SCGA put on a strong showing, besting the SCPGA 35-19 in the two-day event, played at La Quinta CC. After Day 1 Four-Ball matches that left the two teams closely matched, Day 2 went the way of the amateurs, as the SCGA expanded its two-point lead during the Monday singles matches to win by 16.
Continuing his impressive 2016 season was Stewart Hagestad of Big Canyon CC, who won all three of his singles match points on Monday while recording six birdies over 17 holes of play. Hagestad, who spent the summer playing golf on the East Coast and earned victories at both the MGA Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur, will follow up the Honors Matches by heading to The Los Angeles CC to participate in the Walker Cup Practice Session. Also sweeping their Monday points were senior player Mark Harding and Lakeside member Bowen Osborn.
But competitive golf was just one piece of the Honors Matches event, which also featured the honoring of SCPGA's Pat Rielly, PGA and the SCGA's past president Bill Cunerty for their dedication and service to the two organizations and the Southern California golf landscape.
The teams for the Honors Matches are selected by each Association based on their points list. Four senior spots are also held for each squad.
