SoCal Sweeps 2017 State Championship
University High of Irvine took the team title, while Zoe Campos of West Ranch High won the individual title in the CIF Girls’ State High School Championship held Tuesday at par-71 Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach.
University High shot a score of 28-over 383, defeating runner-up Troy High of Fullerton by seven shots. It marks the first State title for University, which had placed third at the CIF/SCGA Regional finals at Canyon Crest last week.
“From the very beginning of the season, we’ve just had a deep team,” University Head Coach Kevin Kasper said. “Everyone has been very consistent throughout the year. It hasn’t been one player carrying us. They’ve all carried one another.”
University was paced by Dana Choi, Nodoka Honda and Coco Yang, who all shot 74. Other scores for University were Samantha Cabunag (79), Alexis Kim (82) and Kristin Shea (92).
Troy High was led by Isabel Sy’s 75 and a pair of 77s from Kamille Dimayuga and Mylan Hirata. Walnut High was third at 391. The best NorCal finish was by Granite Bay at 398.
On the individual front, Campos led the field with a solid 2-under 69 that featured three birdies and a bogey. Only a freshman, Campos’ big birdie of the day came on the par-4 4th, where she sank a curling 35-footer.
“I thought the course was tough but I got around it. It wasn’t what I was expecting,” Campos said. “I thought I’d make more putts. I was fortunate to get up-and-down a lot.”
Finishing tied for second at 73 were Mater Dei’s Brianna Navarrosa and Pioneer High senior Sabrina Iqbal. Iqbal, who was making her final CIF appearance and is headed to Texas Christian University in the fall of 2018, won the individual title as a freshman in 2014.
