NEW 2008 SCGA Points Program Overview

2008 brings new life, credence, and an incentive to earn SCGA Points.  As in years past, the SCGA points program recognizes golfers who give strong performances in SCGA, USGA, CGA and other selected outside tournaments.  The cumulative list provides us with a Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year (age 55 and above), both of whom will be recognized at the year-end, SCGA Annual Meeting.  The SCGA Points Year is November 1, 2007 through October 31, 2008.

In addition to these honors, there is new found reason to earn points.  Running concurrently with the Player of the Year list will be a 2008 Match Play Points List.  This specially created list represents the cumulative total from the 2007 Player of the Year race plus the current 2008 list.  At the conclusion of the 2008 SCGA Amateur Championship (July 18 – 20, Saticoy CC), the top 32 players on the Match Play Points List plus the top 16 players on the Senior Match Play Points List will earn invitations to compete in the inaugural SCGA Match Play Championship, to be played August 12 – 14, 2008 at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta.

The SCGA Points List will also be a tool used to assist in the selection of participants for the annual Honors Matches – a competition between the SCGA and SCPGA’s finest.

The distribution of points can be found under the Points Distribution link.  In the event of ties, each player will earn the maximum points possible.  For example, if two players tied for 2nd place at the SCGA Amateur, each player would earn 395 points, the maximum number of points for that position—they would not split the total of 2nd and 3rd place points.  The next finisher would then earn 4th place points.  In match play events, players can earn points for qualifying for the championship and for the highest round of match play they reach.

The 2008 standings can be viewed in their entirety under the Player of the Year link.  By clicking on a player’s name, one can also view their entire year’s résumé, including events they’ve participated in, points they’ve earned, and even some of their scorecards!

Rules and Clarifications for 2008:

  • In order to be eligible for Player of the Year honors, one must compete in, or attempt to qualify for, at least one of the following events: SCGA Amateur Championship, SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship, or the CGA Amateur Championship.
  • In order to earn points, one must be a member of the SCGA at the time of the event in which points were earned.
  • In the event of a tie for any place on the Match Play Points List, the tie shall be broken based on performance in the 2008 SCGA Amateur Championship.  If a tie still exists we will look at performance in the 2008 CGA Amateur Championship, followed by the 2008 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship, followed by a sporting draw.
  • If a senior player (i.e. a player age 55 or older at the time of the event) earns points for an event that is only recognized on the regular Player of the Year list, those points will be applied to his senior standings.
  • If a player between the ages of 50 and 54 competes in an event classified as a “senior event”, he is not eligible to earn points in those events.
    • Exception: Points earned in any stage of the U.S. Senior Open by a player in this age range will be credited to the regular Player of the Year standings.
  • In the event of a tie for any place on the Senior Match Play Points List, the tie shall be broken based on performance in the 2008 SCGA Senior Amateur Championship.  If a tie still exists we will look at performance in the 2007 SCGA Senior Amateur Championship, followed by the 2008 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship, followed by a sporting draw.

Points for Outside Tournaments:
To submit your outside event for SCGA Points consideration in 2009, you must contact the Rules and Competitions Department at the SCGA to obtain a Points Application.

Good luck in your quest to become the SCGA Player of the Year!
