SCGA takes on The Links at Petco Park

November 03, 2016

The SCGA traveled to San Diego earlier this week for a second shot at The Links at Petco Park. Last year, we took you on a behind-the-scenes tour of the first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Padres and Callaway Golf. After overwhelming success, and four days of sold out play, the two entities are at it again with a new and improved nine-hole course.

This year, new hole locations were designed, taking golfers through more of the Petco Park facility, which is set to host 2,700 golfers from Nov. 3-8. The experience features holes ranging from 64 yards to 134 yards, and players embark on a journey that takes them onto the Padres field, in the home team's clubhouse, out to right field as well as throughout the stadium seating.

Each hole features a unique theme. Everything from “Game Shows” (earn prizes on a replica ‘Plinko’ board from The Price is Righ to “The King” (a homage to the legendary Arnold Palmer, fully stocked with two coolers of iced tea and lemonade to mix your own famous refreshment). These gimmicky themes add an entertainment value to an experience that is already a thrill for both golfers and baseball fans, but do provide a nice distraction during a couple pace of play slowdowns.

Throughout the round, golfers are able to swing the latest Callaway equipment, including Steelhead XR Irons, MD3 Milled Wedges and Chrome Soft Golf Balls. How about that for an ultimate demo day experience? And to top it off? A hole in one could have you leaving the ballpark with some Callaway gear of your own!

While we were busy not winning hole-in-one prizes, it got us thinking: Where else would you love to see a unique golf course? We had a few thoughts:

-Fenway Park - Who wouldn’t want to rip a wedge from the top of the Green Monster?

-Rose Bowl - “The granddaddy of them all.” Between the history and setting, it’s a top choice. How about trying to "hit" a field goal with a golf ball and a wedge?

-Grand Canyon - You’ll need a top-notch caddie to judge the adjusted distance into the Colorado River.

-Disneyland - Make your way around the park, hitting greens in Space Mountain, or search for your ball with Indiana Jones.

-The Great Wall of China - Only need to bring your putter to this venue as it’s tailor made for a wild mini-putt course.

Where else would you want to play? Drop a note in the comments below! Our conclusion? Stadium golf is fun.

All the major fields and stadiums for both Baseball and FootBall. I would love to have heard about this earlier so I could have gone to Petco Park but I have to work.

Please, not the Grand Canyon. Some things are sacred.
