SCGA member Jim Knoll, a member of Brookside Men's GC, has reached the semifinals of the USGA Senior Amateur Championship, defeating defending champion Louis Lee 2 up in a Wednesday morning quarterfinal match. Knoll will face Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC in a semifinal match Wednesday afternoon.
“Someone is looking out for me,” said Knoll, who was seeded No. 60 for match play. “[Lee] didn’t make any putts; his speed and pace were off.”
Knoll, who was the runner-up of this year's SCGA Senior Match Play Championship and also finished T3 at the SCGA Senior Amateur Championship, shot rounds of 72 and 77 Saturday and Sunday during the stroke play portion of the event to advance to the 64-person match play field. He won his Rd. of 32 match in dramatic fashion Tuesday, coming back to win after being 3 down with four holes to play.
“I just left two or three (shots) out there,” said Lee, whose match-play record in the Senior Amateur is now 10-1. “With Jim Knoll, you can’t do that. He never lets up."
