On the Cover
Weather, water and vistas like this one at SilverRock Resort
in La Quinta make golf king in the Coachella Valley. The game
continues to expand in the desert. |

Roger Kelly: last
of an era, but not of his kind
Originally, I planned to write this as a straightforward
obituary about Roger Kelly, one of the great amateur golfers in
California history, who passed away on November 20 at the age of
88. More.

It's Only A Number
Gerry Simoni fired a 69 to win the Championship Flight of
the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions - for 2004, just like he
did in 1977! There were five champions in the President's Flight
and Dennis Chance copped the vice President's plate. Also
included is our annual list of club champions from around the
SCGA. More.

The Buddy System
Friends for several years, Santa Claritans Tucker Brown
and Brad Uptgraft played as a team for the first time and
qualified for the SCGA Four-Ball Championship a The SCGA Golf
Course. They're 1-for-1 after Uptgraft sank a birdie putt on the
last hole, enough for one-stroke victory. More.

They're Back
Joanne Lee lost the state high school girls individual
championship last year by bogeying the playoff hole. She made
the winner's circle this year in regulation, as Grace Woo of
Burbank was runner-up the second day in a row. Torrey Pines
bounced back from a regional loss to win the state title at Red
Hill CC. More.

Still In Sharp
Focus
Alton Duhon got to be a good golfer by working at it from the
ground up - all the way to the 1982 USGA Senior Amateur
Championship. Now, at 80, his considerable energies are directed
toward young golfers at the Tregnan Golf Academy in Griffith
Park. More.

Competitive Edge
With the new year comes a new tournament season, the busiest
ever. All the nuts and bolts for those entering amateur events
in '05 are included in our package. More.

Pop Goes the
Desert, Again...
There's no sign of a standstill in golf when it comes
