THE OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GOLF ASSOCIATION

Award-winning FORE Magazine is a bimonthly, four-color publication mailed to the home of each SCGA member as part of their membership. In addition to its six regular issues, FORE publishes travel supplements throughout the year covering such areas as Hawaii, Arizona and the Coachella Valley. In conjunction with the Southern California Section of the PGA, the SCGA also publishes the annual Southern California Directory of Golf -- Southern California's most complete golf reference book -- which is also mailed to SCGA members as part of their annual membership fee.

It's Manny's World
Mantor Hays led virtually all the way and was the only player to finish under par in winning the SCGA Mid-Amateur at Pauma Valley CC - his last amateur event.

The Young (and Not-So-Young) Champions
Sihwan Kim, 15, and Jane Park, 17, brought USGA championships back to Southern California this summer. Kemp Richardson added his second British Senior amateur to two U.S. Senior Amateur titles. Plus, the California Women's Champion, a two-time all-American, who earns her spending money at The SCGA Golf Course.

The first extra holes in more than two decades of Pacific Coast Amateur events resulted in a win by Michael Putnam of Washington and Pepperdine University.

The biennial competition between teams from the SCGA and NCGA returns to Ojai Valley Inn.

Fiesta Del Golf
For the first time, the SCGA hosted a tournament at one of its south-of-the-(Mexican) border clubs, Bajamar Oceanfront Golf Resort. Rick Kidder and Kyle Llewellyn of AGA Precision Golf took the win in the SCGA Affiliate Club Team Championship.

A Senior Summer
A new event, the SCGA Senior Four-ball Match Play, made a well received debut at The SCGA Golf Course. Steve Rhorer and Pete Daley of Orange County won the scratch flight, one of four flights contested.

Jason Gore reprised his California Open win of 1997, but needed a playoff to do it at The SCGA Golf course.

Manny Hays cover photo

Manny Hays of Palm Desert was out of the lead only briefly in the second round in winning the 21st SCGA Mid-Amateur, his last event before testing pro golf at the PGA Tour Q-school.
