Centennial's Martin wins the CIF-WSCGA title in her third attempt and has her senior year remaining
Allison Martin made an even-par 72 stand up for the individual championship of the CIF/WSCGA Girls High School championship at The SCGA Members' Club. The junior at Bakersfield's Centennial High gave the Central Section its first individual championship in the more the three decades that the four-section format has been in place. Martin had finished in the top 10 the previous two years.
Unbeaten Torrey Pines High of La Jolla defended its team championship as three of its scorers returned from last year's team. Hannah Jun, who tied for ninth in the individual competition, led the way with a 76, and the Falcons won by 12 shots.
Southern Section champion Nicole Smith of Martin Luther King in Riverside was in a group at 73 as was Carling Cho of Dana Hills, who tied for third with Jun a year ago. The cool weather and afternoon wind had some effect on scoring, but Martin blamed her putting on the back nine for not breaking par. She had five birdies on the front nine, but four-putted for a double bogey at No. 12.
Long Beach Wilson had sentimental rooters at the event. Three weeks earlier, Jennifer Tangtiphaboontana, who lost the title as a freshman two years ago in a playoff, was involved in an auto accident with teammate Diane Sirisut. Tangtiphaboontana's parents were killed, but both girls wanted to play anyway.
