When a player has posted fewer than 20 scores, his SCGA/USGA Handicap Index is based on a lower percentage of scores than the 50% ideally used (best 10 of 20). The accuracy and reliability of the Handicap System improves as the number of acceptable scores approaches 20. A player with 20 acceptable scores will have a handicap more representative of his potential ability than a player who has returned fewer scores. The LI or Low Index is used primarily to calculate tournament handicaps. The SCGA's Team Play events are conducted using the Low Index. The LI shown on the monthly reports and verified on membership cards is the lowest index a player has over the past twelve months. In order for a player to establish an LI they will need to have been a SCGA Member for at least 1 year and have a full scoring history of twenty scores. Any competition played to LI shall be determined by the Committee in charge of the competition and must be published prior to the start of the competition. Some competitions are conducted to the Low Index of the last 3 or 6 months. - Updated: August 24, 2005
