President's Cup and Club Elections

Congratulations to this year's President's Cup Champions: the 2009 Gross Champion is Ken Zemanek and the Net Champion is Paul Findley. They recieved the highest tournament awards (see 2009 President's Cup results) and their names will be immortalized on our Club Champions plaque located in the Doubletree Pro Shop.

The get-together at Charlie's house following the tournament was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The yearly election of Club officers went as predicted since only the incumbents were on the ballot. Unanimously re-elected were Mike Jeffers as Club president, Bob Maggiore as handicap chairman, and Jeff Dunn as tournament director.

The Doubletree Men's Golf Club annual club championship was conducted last weekend. Top honors were earned by Bree Calabrese and Don Carmichael. Bree shot a combined net score of 141 for the two day tournament to capture the title of Low Net Champion and Don had a gross 147 to earn him the title of Low Gross Champ. Four Ball Tournament

Congratulations to the team of Winet/Maggiore/Dunn/Stout for taking first place in Saturday's tournament with a team score of 300. Last year in Four Ball play the team scores were appreciably lower but the current course conditions may be the factor. The course is in great shape with lush fairways and greens, but strokes can pile up in a hurry on the speedy greens. After Saturday's play there was much talk of 3 and 4 putts and in one case a 5 putt.

See the tournament scoreboard and awards for tournament results.

Here's a couple of reminders to all Doubletree Men's Club Members:

1) All monies awarded from previous tournament and sweeps competition that currently remain on the Doubletree Pro Shop ledger must be cleared (spent) before December 31. Amounts remaining after that date will be pooled to buy merchandize awards for future tournaments. So if you don't want your winnings to be given away, act before the deadline.

2) Starting next month, all tournament awards will be dispursed in Pro Shop script certificates that each award recipient will keep in his possession. The Pro Shop will no longer maintain a ledger of award amounts. The script certificates can be used, as before with ledger amounts, to purchase discounted Pro Shop merchandise.

3) Beginning with Saturday sweeps competition on December 22, sweeps awards will be handled by Club members. One person from each foursome will be responsible for collection of competiton fees from his group and presenting it to the sweeps scorer following the round.

11/3/07

Yellow Ball Tournament

Saturday's Yellow Ball Plus Best 2 of 3 tournament was closely contested with only one stroke separating 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. The narrow win went to the team of Fogarty, Pittard, Carter, and Rodis (see tournament scoreborad and awards).

After the round Dan Thompson sat in solitude outside the Doubletree clubhouse contemplating his team's loss of first place by one stroke because of what he described as his "bad play". None-the-less, most of his teammates agreed that if they had to they would play with him again.

9/22/07

President's Cup Tournament

Rainy weather didnt dampen the spirits of Saturdays Presidents Cup participants, especially since there were payouts for all (See tournament scoreboard and awards). Randy Winet was the low gross winner after shooting a one under par 71 and Bill Chipman shot a net 65 to earn honors as the low net champion ( Randy/Bill). This was a repeat win for both golfers since Randy won low gross and Bill low net at this years Club Championship tournament. Congratulations to both golfers on a fine season.

Many thanks to Charlie Purviance for once again hosting an after-round lunch/club meeting at his residence. It was a great setting and fine feast. A special thanks to Scott Cannon for providing the shrimp.

The election conducted at the club meeting following lunch at Charlies resulted in the re-elections of Jeff Dunn as Tournament Chairman, Bob Maggiore as Handicap Chairman, and the first time election of Mike Jeffers as Club President ( Mike/Jeff/Bob). After the election Mike talked about plans for next seasons tournament formats and encouraged all to get in their renewal fees as soon as possible.

8/4/07

Stableford Tournament Results

Saturday's club tournament used a modified Stableford format where for once scoring high is a good thing. Points were awarded for the following net scores: birdies + 2 points; eagles + 5; pars 0, bogies -1, and double bogies -2. Out of the 3 tournament flights, Tom Christopher posted the highest point total, 22 points. His 3 gross birdies (net eagles) on the back 9 didn't hurt his overall score. See tournament scoreboard for a complete list of all tournament scores.

6/23/07

Two-Man Better Ball Tournament

Ken Zemanek and John Petrash are this year's better-ball champions and will represent our club in upcoming SCGA regional competition. They put together a net score of 63 to edge out six other teams having net 64's (see tournament winners for a list of awards and the tournament scoreboard for all scores.) Good luck Ken and John in your upcoming matches. Dates and results of their competition will be published on our website.

5/20/07

2007 Club Championship

Congratulations to Randy Winet and Bill Chipman for their play in this year's Doubletree Men's Club Championship, our annual 2-day tournament conducted this past Saturday and Sunday. Randy posted a gross 157 to win the gross title and Bill a net 141 for the net title. Randy's second day 2 over par 74 was the tournament's low score and the major factor in his win. Winning scores and awards are posted in our website. See Club Championship scoreboard for all tournament scores.

4/21/07

Red, White, and Blue Tournament

Teeing off successively from the blue, white, and then red tees appeared to help many tournament players, evidenced by winning scores of net 64 in Flight C, and 65 in Flights A and B. All scores were captured on the tournament scoreboard by our illustrious Tournament Director Jeff Dunn.

3/10/07

Findley's Follies Tournament

Saturday's club tournament was nicknamed Findley's Follies in honor of club preseident Paul Findley, who suggested the format. Better known as the Foursome's Best Choice tournament, each team calculated a final score by using just one net score per hole from the 4-man team. Choosing the one score could result in folly since all choices had to include 5 A, 5 B, 4 C, and 4 D scores. Mathematically, the possible combinations total approximately 772 million combinations.

Despite the unusual format, team scores were low and competition was close (see tournament scoreboard for all team scores and awards for tournament winnings). The team of Zemanek, Purviance, Davis, and Norfleet posted a net 55 to best all other competitors but only one stroke decided 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, with 4th place being decided by a card off.

Three of the teams with the top scores included new club members, John Cobb, Thomas delRio, and Don Carmichael. Additionally, closest-to-the-pin awards were taken by Don and John. Congratulations to our new members and welcome to the club!

Four-Man Team Tournament Results

Saturday's Four-Man team event required card-off's to determine first- and fourth-place winning teams. Edberg/White/Christopher/Poirier edged out Abbey/Pittard/Tekach/Stout for first place by having a lower back nine team score, and Calabrese/Jeffers/Sports/Norfleet won a card-off for fourth place to knock Winet/Smith/Carter/Rodis off the money list (see tournament scoreboard for all team scores).

10/28/06

Yellow Ball Tournament

The first tournament of the 2006-2007 season was kicked off with a yellow ball format. The team of Miller/Maggiore/White/Stout posted a team score of 15 under (201), edging out the second place team by two strokes (see tournament scoreboard for complete results).

The full slate of tournament formats for this season have yet to be defined. If you have any ideas, please email them to our tournament director (Jdunn263@cox.net).

9/16/06

President's Cup Tournament

Everyone was a winner at Saturdays Presidents Cup, the Clubs tournament finale of the 2005-2006 season (tournament results). Eric Edberg earned the title of Presidents Cup gross champion by posting a gross score of 73 and the net title was captured by Ed Carter with a net 69 (Eric and Ed) after a card-off with Tony Bullock (pictured with Scott Cannon.

Following tournament play everyone got together at Charlie Purviances residence for food and beverages and yearly club elections. Thanks go out to Charlie for hosting the party and a special thanks to Scott Cannon for supplying the shrimp. Its safe to say everyone had a great time (pic1 pic2 pic3 pic4 pic5 pic6 pic7 ).

Congratulations to all of the Club officers elected during the meeting. Roger White (Roger) was newly elected as the Club Rules Chairman and Ed Carter the Club Secretary-Webmaster. Re-elected at vice-president was Rick Davis and Charlie Purviance as treasurer.

Hopefully all are looking forward to the 2006-2007 season. Jeff Dunn reports he has scheduled a total of 16 tournaments for next season and the Doubletree Resort has agreed to award a free round to any current Club member that brings in a new member.

Four-Ball Net Qualifier

SCGA Golf Course Murrieta, Ca - August 21, 2006

It was a crisp August morning when Bree Calabrese and Roger White, paired with Bob Townsend and Eric Bond, teed off on #1 at the SCGA Course. Bree and Roger had played 2 practice rounds at the course but were feeling the pressure of representing the Doubletree Mens Golf Club in the tournament. Bree made a three foot par putt on the first hole and birdied the par three second after getting his tee shot within 18 inches of the pin. Roger birdied the third hole for a net eagle to relieve that earlier pressure and take the team to three under after three holes. They were seven under after nine holes and gave back a stroke on both ten and eleven. They net birdied four of the closing seven holes to end up 9 under par and tied for third place. Chula Vista, the winners of the qualifying round were 12 under. Roger said it was a true ham and egg performance with Bree doing most of the clutch golf shots for the team. Bree and Roger are both looking forward to the 2 day championship tournament at the River Course at Alisal Golf Club in Solvang California on the 18th and 19th of September. Lets all wish them luck and to have fun, and win it!

5/21/06

2006 Club Championship

Congratulations to Dan Sivadge and Tony Bullock. On Sunday, May 21, Dan led the field by a comfortable five stroke lead to score a two-day gross score of 146 and earn him the title of 2006 Doubletree Mens Club Low Gross Champion. Tony's net total of 136 included a back-9 score of 2 under (gross) and earned him the title of Net Champion. Well done to both golfers!

The following photo, taken during Sunday's play, captures Dan teeing off on hole 15 as fellow competitors Eric Edberg and Dan Thompson look on. Mike Miller, not depicted in photo, earned a spot in the final foursome by posting Saturday's low gorss of 73.

12/17/05

Four Man Team Tournament

In Saturday's event every stroke counted (up to a triple-bogey max per individual) since the net score all four team members was used to calculate team score. Despite popular predictions that it would be difficult to achieve an overall net total under par, the foursome of Carter/Zemanek/Smith/Chipman managed to eke out a 2-under 286. This accomplishment was greatly aided by the brillant play of Stan-the-Man Smith who carded a net 7-under for the round. (see tournament results or tournament scoreboard for complete results)

Thanks to Alan Balone of the Doubletree Resort (thank you Alan!), Dan Sivadge walked away with a brand new TaylorMade rescue club by being closest to the pin on the 16th hole. I'm sure this is the missing club in Dan's bag that will propel his 0.3 current index back into positive numbers.

11/19/05

Yellow Ball and Butterball

Teams with the four lowest scores in Saturday's Yellow Ball tournament were treated to not only the customary awards (see tournament scoreboard), but also $20 gift certificates for Albertsons, more than enough for a giant turkey for next Thursday's Thanksgiving Day table.

The winning team of Fecko, Bullock, Smith, and Poirier topped the field with a team total of 20 under par, an unexpectedly low score for the yellow ball plus best 2 of 3 format.

10/22/05

New Club Tournament Season Begins

Saturdays Best Two of Four tournament was the kickoff for the new 2005-2006 Club season. Due to recent reseeding of the course, carts were restricted to cart paths and the greens were slowed by a higher cut. Nonetheless, tournament entrants appeared to have little trouble in scoring low. The winning team of Calabrese, Zybala, Sileneck, and Carter were able to complete the round at 27 strokes under par for a net total of 117 and 3 strokes better than the second place team (see tournament results or tournament scoreboard for complete results).
