As with all “best of” type lists, this one should be taken with a grain of salt, especially since a honeymoon is such a personal event for any newlyweds. And it’s probably also safe to say that any couple that collectively decides to have their honeymoon at a golf resort must both really love playing a round together — something that might drive even the loveliest of couples nuts. Either way, here is a modest list of the best golf resorts in Southern California for the occasion:
The Lodge at Torrey Pines
For starters, the location of La Jolla itself is one of the most beautiful places in Southern California, period. Other than catering to guests of the legendary Torrey Pines Golf Course, the Lodge is as great of a hotel as you’ll find considering its rating as a AAA Five Diamond La Jolla hotel for 15 years running. The beautiful, breath-taking views of the golf course and the Pacific Ocean definitely set the tone for romance and relaxation.
The Lodge resort is only a 30-min or so drive from Downtown, San Diego, where the restaurant and nightlife options are basically endless. The resort features 170 guest rooms (7 suites), and has the amenities you would want like a wonderful 9,500 sq. ft spa facility and fine-dining restaurants with great ambiances. But of course, the star of the resort for any couple who wants to make golf a big part of their honeymoon will undoubtedly be the golf course.
Set to host the 2021 U.S. Open, the Torrey Pines Golf Course offers 36 awesome holes and you can breathe in all the fresh ocean air you want as it hugs the La Jolla coast. Seriously though, the views are tough to beat and who doesn’t want to play at Torrey Pines?
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Another Five Diamond resort, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar actually boasts being rated as the No. 1 luxury hotel in California by TripAdvisor. With the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve serving as a gorgeous backdrop, the Grand Del Mar has 249 rooms, a reputation for top-tier service, a Five-Star spa (only 25 in the country total), and six fine-dining restaurants. This resort is also about a 30-min drive from Downtown San Diego.
As for the golf course, the Grand Golf Club course is simply gorgeous. As the only golf course in San Diego that was designed by Tom Fazio, the jaw-dropping visuals are basically infinite. You have the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, amazing San Diego weather, ocean breeze, and just a great golf course to play, really. With 18 holes and a length of 7,160 yards, the experience of playing on the course with your wife or husband will be special.
Resort at Pelican Hill
Now, while the Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach will surely be on most, if not all, lists like this, it’s tough to argue against it. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or don’t know how to use the Internet, even pictures of this place are hard to believe. And if you take a look at their website, it’s easy to see why Pelican Hill is a Five-Star resort.
The resort features guest rooms, suites, and villas for you to choose from. It also has a circular pool that’s 136 feet in diameter, surrounded by luxurious cabanas. There are also six dining venues and a special Crystal Cove Beach day that the resort will organize for you. This is also not to mention the Five-Star spa that comes stacked with all the relaxation amenities you can think of. If everything that Pelican Hill has to offer doesn’t get your romance bubbling, very few things will.
As for the golf course, it’s another one of Tom Fazio’s greatest, but what truly makes the Pelican Hill golf course special is that it’s really two courses, and the immersive feeling of literally playing on the ocean is second to none. The 36 holes you and your wife or husband can play here will certainly be a highlight of a golf-centric honeymoon.
Park Hyatt Aviara Resort
Rated as Golf Digest’s No. 1 golf resort in San Diego, the Park Hyatt Aviara Golf Club resort has it all. The resort itself is a Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond rated establishment that has 327 rooms, each with a private terrace or balcony, depending on the type of room you have. The Aviara spa is 15,000 sq. ft in space and features the top-tier amenities you’d expect, and the resort also features the Argyle Steakhouse, one of San Diego’s best.
The Aviara Golf Club golf course was designed by none other than the iconic Arnold Palmer and features 18 holes of rolling hills, bunkers, and beautiful Southern California landscape. The course is not only beautiful, but undoubtedly challenging as well. Any newlywed couple playing this course together will surely have a blast.
While it’s not nearly as close to Downtown San Diego, the Aviara is still in a beautiful area of Southern California and will not disappoint.
