Overview of SCGA
The Club Relations department was created in 1997 to accommodate for the growth and implementation of the Club Delegate Program. Beginning in 1994 the Delegate Program was born out of an idea to have a contact person at each of our member clubs through which information could be channeled in a timely and efficient manner. The basis of the program is to better communicate and strengthen ties with our member clubs. Along with the delegates, club relations also handles the Speakers Bureau. This is an opportunity for our member clubs to utilize the services of the staff to speak at member club functions. Topics may range from The Rules of Golf to Agronomy to History of the Association. It is a wonderful opportunity for the staff to meet members of the association. For more information on the Speaker’s Bureau or the Club Delegate Program please contact the Club Relations department at the SCGA, or visit the 'Delegate' section of this web site.

The Rules & Competitions department conducts over 100 tournament days per year including SCGA Championship events as well as USGA Qualifying events. All SCGA members are welcome to participate in any of the events as long as they meet the index requirements for the tournament. These tournaments include individual events such as the SCGA Amateur, Amateur Net Championship, Tournament of Club Champions and the Senior Amateur Championship. Some of the team events include the Affiliate Team Championship, Desert Team Championship, Four-Ball Net Championship and our Team Play Championships. The staff are extremely well versed in The Rules of Golf and will help resolve any rules questions the members may have as well as provide Rules Seminars for member clubs. The Handicap & Membership department is the backbone of the SCGA. Their responsibilities range from welcoming new member clubs into the association to handling file maintenance issues for handicap chairmen and enforcing and interpreting the Rules of Amateur Status. There are over 1,200 handicap chairmen the department stays in contact with to resolve any issues the club may have. The department develops and maintains the handicap software, E/2, which allows golfers to post their scores at all courses in Southern California and have it recorded to their file. For any questions on your membership please contact the Handicap & Membership department, or visit the 'Handicap & Membership' section of this web site.

The Course Rating department is responsible for the rating and measurement of every golf course which is a member of the association. The United States Golf Association mandates that golf courses be rated no less than once every ten years. The SCGA tries to accomplish this task every eight years. Clubs which have undergone major renovations should contact the association to see if a re-rating is necessary sooner than the scheduled time period. The department should also be contacted if a temporary rating needs to be issued for construction on the course, storm damage, etc. The Department works closely with UC Riverside Turfgrass Research Advisory Committee to strengthen the communication between UCR and turfgrass organizations by identifying researchable issues and implementing focused research to answer current and emerging issues. Most importantly they are able to provide an objective resource for decision makers regarding the public perception of the value of turfgrass. For questions regarding course rating please contact the Rating department, or visit the 'Course Rating / Green Section' of this web site.

The Communications department is responsible for the media relations of the association. From writing, producing and publishing FORE Magazine to updating the SCGA web site the communications department has a direct impact on each of the individual members. The staff wants to know about golfing achievements of your members such as Holes on One, Sweet Shots or maybe one of your members has a unique occupation or a storied history with the game of golf. The SCGA loves to hear about these stories and publish them in FORE Magazine. The department is a great source of information for the history of the association. Information regarding the date a club joined the association, who designed a particular golf course to who holds the course record is available to you. The Communications department also publishes The Southern California Directory of Golf jointly with the Southern California Section of the PGA This is a comprehensive listing of all golf courses in Southern California including the play policy, green fees, contact information and directions to the course. Finally, the department oversees the design and content of the SCGA website, www.scga.org. Here, members can find out the latest tournament information, view special offers from the Partner’s Program and verify a Handicap Index. For questions please contact the Communications department, or visit the 'Communications & FORE' section of this web site.
