Meet Kevin Heaney

Executive Director

Kevin began his work with the SCGA in 1984 as Director of Rules and Competitions. Following nine years in this role, Kevin assumed the position of Director of Course Rating, an assignment that lasted 10 years. In 2003, Kevin was promoted to Assistant Director of the SCGA and was named Executive Director in 2006 upon the retirement of Tom Morgan.

Aside from the functions associated with his job responsibilities, Kevin has participated in many activities including USGA committees (Green Section, Course Rating, Regional Associations), California Alliance for Golf, is a board member of the International Association of Golf Administrators, works actively with the SCGA Foundation and has served on a variety of advisory committees (PGA, UC Riverside Turf, City and County of Los Angeles Golf, and the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission).

What company or organization do you admire and why?

"I admire companies that constantly strive to improve. In Jim Collin’s Good to Great, he describes how companies are able to make the transition from a good operation to an industry leader. A cautionary tale, however, is that some of the firms he describes in his 2001 book have since fallen on hard times; perhaps why a later book was titled How the Mighty Fall. The SCGA is in year 113 of its existence and must remain ever vigilant to adapt to the challenges facing the golf industry."

What is your fondest SCGA memory?

"Having done this for a few years, I recall some special moments; Mark Johnson’s duel with Tiger Woods at the SCGA Amateur at Hacienda GC in 1994, Patrick Cantlay’s great win last year at the same event at San Gabriel CC, the Hall of Fame ceremonies for Dave Stockton, Al Geiberger, Charlie Sifford and Amy Alcott were all very memorable. Two items of significant importance were the revitalization of the SCGA Foundation and the combination of the SCGA with the Southern California Public Links Golf Association. The ability to expand opportunities for area youth as well as seeing the union of two great golf associations were landmark moments for golf in Southern California."

As the face of the SCGA, you must be out in the field a lot. How’s your golf game?

"Unfortunately, the longer you work in the golf industry, the less you get a chance to play the game. I will say, however, in my career I have had the good fortune to play poorly on some of the finest courses in the world."
