It could be deja vu all over again.
Tim Hogarth of Northridge, a three-time winner of the SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship, holds the lead after day one of the 27th playing of the event, thanks to two rounds of 67 for an 8-under-par 134 at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles.
Hogarth is the defending champion of the event for ages 25 and older, having won last year's championship at Hacienda Golf Club. Over Hillcrest's 6,539-yard layout, Hogarth's flawless afternoon round of four birdies and no bogeys complemented a nearly perfect round of only one bogey and five birdies in the morning. Hogarth holds a two-shot lead over Ladera Ranch resident and 2008 SCGA Foursomes champion Jason Bittick, who went 70-66--136 on the day (his 5-under 66 was the lowest round today, thanks to seven birdies and two bogeys).
Multiple SCGA champion John Pate of Santa Barbara, a frequent partner of Hogarth's in SCGA team events, sits in third after rounds of 75-67--138, while Tony Behrstock of Los Angeles, a Hillcrest member with 14 club championships under his belt, is even-par thanks to an afternoon surge of 71-67--142.
The field is cut to the low 42 scores and ties for tomorrow's final round. Tee times begin at 8:00 a.m., with the lead group teeing off last, at 9:28 a.m. Spectators are welcome to attend.
