CIF/SCGA Southern Cal Regional/State Championship

The CIF-SCGA Southern Regional event is sponsored by the SCGA Foundation. The California Interscholastic Federation is divided into four districts, and each provides contestants in the events based on district student population. TheSouthern Regional is a one-day event, with teams and individual students competing in 18 holes of stroke play. At the conclusion of the round, the top six individuals and top three teams advance to the state championship, which is conducted in Southern California every other year.

      
Freshman Ben Doyle from La Jolla High School claimed the CIF/SCGA Southern California High School Championship with a round of 4-under 68 at Brookside GC's #1 Course. Doyle won the title in a playoff over La Jolla Country Day’s Anthony Paolucci and Adolfo Camarillo’s Johnny Ruiz, who also shot 68’s. Doyle joins a long list of San Diego area greats that have won the championship, a list which includes fellow La Jolla High School stars Craig Stadler who won in 1971. Others who have won this title include PGA Tour stand outs Phil Mickelson (1987), Tiger Woods (1991), Chris Riley (1992), Charlie Hoffman (1994 & 1995) and Rickie Fowler (2004).

Torrey Pines High School claimed the team title with a team score of 7-over par, 367. The winner’s circle is familiar territory for Torrey Pines, as they won this same title last year (this is their 9^th Southern California title overall) and won the State Championship in 2004.

The top three teams advance to the State High School Championship to be held at Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach next Wednesday, June 8. Joining Torrey Pines at the championship will be Servite High School (371) and Santa Margarita High School (374).

The top-6 individuals not on a qualifying team also advance to the State Championship. Those qualifiers are Doyle, Ruiz, Kameron Kubis (69) and Alexander Schauffele (70) from Scripps Ranch High School, Jonathan Sanders (70) from New Jewish Community High School and Clayton Yamaguchi (70) from Venice High School. Anthony Paolucci declined his spot to the State Championship as he is playing in the U.S. Open Sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio next week followed by the PGA Tour’s Fedex St. Jude Classic, which he earned a sponsor’s exemption into.
