Four new golfers have been crowned the 2007 SCGA Amateur Net champions. Jeffrey Dottl of Ventura won the President Flight of the championship, with rounds of 68-72—140, 4-under-par, at Sycuan Resort in San Diego. The victory, he says was special, due in part to the fact that he almost withdrew the day before. “My wife Susanna is 9 months, 2 weeks pregnant,” he said, “and I really wasn’t sure if I should be playing. She told me to go out there and win it, and I did just that.” The 31-year-old Dottl, a Certified Public Accountant and member at Sterling Hills Golf Club, led the first round of the championship and topped five other plate winners in the scratch flight: second place’s Laguna Niguel’s George Windsor (75-67—142), two ties for third with Temple City’s Kevin Brown (74-69—143) and Bakersfield’s John Austin (71-72—143), and two ties for fifth with Thousand Oaks’ Ronald Fernandez (75-69—144) and Simi Valley’s Rich Adams (71-73—144). Also at Sycuan, Rolando Ventura of Rolling Hills Estates won the Secretary Flight of the championship, when he shot an 8-under-par 136 (66-70) and secured a three shot lead over competitors. Bill Peters of Anaheim shot 73-66—139 to take second, while three golfers tied for third: Diamond Bar’s Khen Wong (72-68—140), San Diego’s P. Gregg Williams (69-71—140) and Barstow’s Bob Tyler (66-74—140). Cottonwood at Rancho San Diego held two more flights. Mark Hamilton of Lake Forest held off two golfers by one shot to win the Vice President Flight with rounds of 64-72—136, 8-under-par. Kevin Roof of San Diego (69-68—137) and Tim Gavin (67-70—137) of Irvine tied for second at 7-under-par, while Thousand Oaks’ Robert Szejn earned fourth place with 72-66—138. Tony LoCascio of Alhambra came in fifth, with 69-70—139. In the Treasurer Flight, Coronado’s Chris Sheppard went sub-par for both rounds to secure the championship at 10-under-par (65-69—134) while Rafael Martinez of Ontario finished four shots back at 71-67—138 for second. Tarzana’s Ronald Kaku (73-66—139) and Gus Garcia of Northridge (71-70—141) finished third and fourth, respectively, while two golfers tied for fifth place at nine shots off the lead: Don Slayton of West Hills (71-72—143) and Peter Balistreri of San Diego (70-73—143).
