The California Golf Association (CGA) Senior Amateur Championship was begun in the fall of 1992, with the first two tournaments being played over the George C. Thomas, Jr.-designed course at Ojai Valley Inn & Spa. In 1994, the event was moved to Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach where it has been conducted ever since during “California Amateur Week.”
Jim McMurtrey of Danville dominated the first decade of the event, winning three of the first seven championships — no one has one more than once since McMurtrey won his third title in 1998.
The championship also has a Team Play event that runs concurrently with the first two rounds. The Northern California Golf Association and Southern California Golf Association each choose four players, with the best three of four scores counting each day for the team score.
