Defending champion Steve Bogan of Placentia is riding a wave of victories, and, heading a field of the state’s 112 best senior golfers, will look for his second state senior amateur victory in the 16th CGA Senior Amateur Championship June 20-22 at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
Bogan, age 58 and 2006 SCGA Senior Player of the Year, will attempt to become the first and only golfer since Jim McMurtrey in 1994-95 to win back-to-back championships. If he does so, he’ll also be only the second golfer in the tournament’s history to win more than one state senior championship.
If his last few rounds are any indication, however, a second CGA victory could be in the cards for Bogan, who was also a co-medalist in the 1987 California State Amateur Championship. In September, secured the historic “senior double” as the first person to ever secure the CGA and SCGA Senior Amateur Championships when he won his second SCGA Senior Amateur title at the Ranch Course at The Alisal, the first two years before.
Other notable golfers in the field include:
Northern California
•Jim McMurtrey of Fair Oaks, who will try for his fourth CGA Senior Amateur title. McMurtrey is the only golfer in the championship’s history to win back-to-back titles as well as the only one to win more than one title (he has won three: 1994, 1995 and 1998).
•Gary Vanier of Pleasant Hill, 2006 CGA Senior Amateur runner-up as well as runner-up of the 1999 California State Amateur and co-medalist of the 1989 California State Amateur. Vanier, a former touring pro who regained his amateur status in 1981, won the 1982 state amateur.
Southern California
•Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel, a two-time U.S. Senior Amateur champion (2001 and 2003) and the 2001 British Senior Open champion. The USC alum was also the low amateur in both the 1999 and 2000 U.S. Senior Open championship, He was the runner up in the 2002 CGA Senior Amateur and he and father John are the only father-son combination to win a USGA championship.
•Kent Richardson of Bakersfield (no relation)
