Whether it be for the competition, the camaraderie or the fun of the tournament, 288 golfers of all skill levels will come to Monterey Peninsula to partake in the 2007 CGA Net Amateur Match Play Championships on June 18-21.
Eighteen flights of 16 players each will compete at either Bayonet, Del Monte or Laguna Seca GCs in match play format against players of like handicap indexes. The tournament is double-elimination. Each flight begins in a round of 16 on June 18, while the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals take place each of the following days. Players losing in the first round will play in the consolation brackets; thus, each player is guaranteed a minimum of two rounds with winners playing up to four rounds of match play.
Flights are named in tribute to Monterey Peninsula's many historic landmarks and points of interest, such as Point Joe and Bird Rock, both of which can be found on 17-Mile Drive. Others, like the Steinbeck flight, represent the people who made the Monterey area famous.
Many come for a summer trip to the Peninsula or looking for fun and competitive golf, but regardless of the reason, California players have been making annual trips to the Monterey Peninsula for years now, some even a decade or longer -- because, they say, the CGA Net Amateur Match Play Championship is one of the most fun net tournaments to play in the summer, in one of the most beautiful locales in the world.
