Alta Vista CC defeats El Dorado Park GC in a playoff to win SCGA Thursday Team Play Championship

APRIL 17, Murrieta -- For the first time in recent memory, a 24-24 tie after regular play resulted in a playoff to determine the SCGA Thursday Team Play champion, and Alta Vista CC persevered, defeating Long Beach's El Dorado Park GC at The SCGA GC. It's the first time that Alta Vista has won the championship.

In following Team Play rules, the lowest-index two-person group from each club were sent out for the playoff. The playoff lasted only one hole though, as Alta Vista's Aaron Egdahl parred the hole to win 2 points for his team versus El Dorado's Mark Perry, while Alta Vista's Scott Parker and Ed Dorado's Mel Collins both parred the hole to halve it and win one point each. The Four-Ball match was halved with pars as well, resulting in a 4-2 playoff victory, and overall championship win, for Alta Vista.

Alta Vista's a true veteran of SCGA Team Play: one of their players, 83-year-old Robert Klinger, is in his 28th year of team play and has played on every Alta Vista team since their start.

PALM DESERT, APRIL 8 -- A hole-in-one by William Erbe propelled the PGA West #2 team to the top of the field, as it rallied from a sixth-place finish after yesterday's first round to win its second SCGA Desert Team Play Championship in three years at Desert Willow Golf Resort.

Erbe's 8-iron ace on the Firecliff Course's third hole gave his team, which all players had a course handicap of 8 or below, four Stableford points on that hole alone, for a total of 491 points and a two-point win over second place PGA West #1. PGA West also won the event in 2007. Cathedral Canyon CC, which came into the final round in first place, finished third in the 32nd playing of the event, scoring 487 points over the championship's 36 holes of play.
