PAR NONE, COAST GOLFERS ARE CO-CHAMPIONS AT 21ST SCGA AFFILIATE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP AT CYPRESS RIDGE GOLF COURSE
ARROYO GRANDE, August 19 — Peter Pozzuoli and C. Michael Summers of Par None Golf Club and Bill and Gary Davison of Coast Golfers earned co-champion honors at the 21st Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Affiliate Team Championship at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
The two clubs each finished with net scores of 133 over the 6,443-yard layout on the Central California coast. Par None was the co-leader after yesterday’s four-ball net round with a 65 and posted a net 68 today under the more difficult Pinehurst (Chapman) format. Coast Golfers shot 66-67 for the two rounds.
Ernie Gomez and Bob Campregher of Pacific Coast won third place in a card-off over Scott Walker and Joe Randle of Tidelands. Each team shot 134 for the two rounds.
The tournament is for SCGA affiliate clubs (often called “golf clubs without real estate”), clubs that are not necessarily connected with a golf course facility. The SCGA has more than 800 affiliate clubs throughout Southern California.
Both times are veterans of this event. For Pozzuoloi, 38, and Summers, 39, this was their third year competing. “We each brought our wives this time around,” said Summers, “and made a trip out of it. This is a beautiful course and is sure inexpensive, at least when compared with courses in Orange County. Plus, I’m sure our wives enjoyed the trip; they’re out shopping.”
In the Pinehurst format (where players each hit their drives, then hit their partners ball for second shots, then choose one ball and play that into the hole using an alternate-shot format), Summers (who is Veri-Tax's vice president of sales and marketing) and Pozzuoli (who is president of Veri-Tax), shot 41-41 to earn their share of the title. “We scrambled a lot and made a lot of putts,” said Pozzuoli after their round
Both players pointed to yesterday’s four-ball net round as the key to their victory. “We shot two 88s,” said Summers, “but it was the ultimate in ‘ham ‘n egg’ golf because we each spread out our pars perfectly.”
The Davison brothers (Bill, 51, is an engineer who lives Escondido and Gary, 54, an optometrist who lives Chula Vista, have played in three previous Affiliate Teamb championships.
They shot net 31 on the front nine and came home with net 36 on the back nine. “Early on,” said Bill after their round, “things didn’t look too good and we had some words with each other. But we settled down and played our games. When you make putts, all is forgiven.”

When Jeffrey Benmoin and Jim Yeh were relaxing at Pala Mesa Resort after winning the 20th SCGA Affiliate Team Championship, Benmoin looked back a couple of years to what spurred him into becoming a better golfer and, ultimately, a two-time SCGA champion.
“My first SCGA tournament was the Amateur Net Championship a couple of years ago,” Benmoin said. “I was in contention and then blew up on the 18th hole. I looked at those big winners’ plates and said, ‘I’m going to get my game together and win at least one of those.’ Two is great.”
Less than a year after winning the SCGA Four-Ball Net Championship, Benmoin and Yeh, representing Roger Dunn-Rancho Cucamonga, teamed up again to win the Affiliate Team Championship.
The pair of respiratory therapists at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, also are the only team in the history of the two tournaments to hold the two titles simultaneously — winning the Four-Ball Net under the Sierra Lakes CC banner. They both joined Roger Dunn specifically to enter the affiliate championship, which uses a four-ball net format for the first round and a Pinehurst (Chapman) format for the finale. They finished at 14-under-par for the two-round championship, shooting 62-68 — 130.
“I looked at the results from last year and realized that the Pinehurst format is much tougher than four-ball,” Yeh said after the event was over. “We followed our game plan to play more conservatively than the first day and we made some clutch putts.”
Benmoin and Yeh combined for two eagles, 14 birdies and only four bogeys through the two-day, 36-hole net tournament, sneaking by The Tree House GC’s Bruce Taylor and Kristin Williams by one shot. Williams, the Vice President Flight co-winner in the 2005 SCGA Tournament of Club Champions, and Taylor, both of Simi Valley, collected three eagles in their 65-66 — 131 effort.
Also in the top of the pack was Team No. 1 for Coast Golfers’ Association of San Diego, comprised of Bill and Gary Davison of Chula Vista and Escondido, respectively, which shot 62-67—132. The team, which was tied for first place after the first round, ended tied for third with Navy Public Works Center’s John Usilton of Chula Vista and Andre Fitzpatrick of La Mesa, 67-65.
Two teams tied for fifth at 134: Red Tide, with Bonita’s Bob Swisher and San Diego’s Daniel Parker, shot 67-67, while Pacific Coast’s Ernie Gomez of Whittier and Bob Campregher of Huntington Beach shot 69-65.
