TOLUCA LAKE, June 17 — Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes and two teenagers — Matt Hoffenberg of Simi Valley and Alex Kim of Fullerton, whose combined ages don’t add up to McGihon’s — shared medalist honors at the 97th California Amateur Championship at Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank and Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.
The 40-year-old McGihon, a former three-time winner of the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Amateur, fired a 3-under-par 67 today over the par-70 Lakeside layout and finished at 140, 2 under par for 36 holes. Hoffenberg, 18, posted an even-par 72 and Kim, 18, shot a 3-under-par 69 over the par-72 Oakmont CC to finished tied with McGihon.
A total of 32 players advanced to match play, 17 from Southern California and 15 from the North. Match play begins Wednesday and the second round of will be played Thursday. Quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the 36-hole championship match will be played Saturday. All matches are at Lakeside GC.
Among those advancing was defending champion Josh Anderson of Murrieta, who shot 2-under-par 68 today at Lakeside and tied for fourth. Anderson is seeking to become the first golfer since Dr. Frank “Bud” Taylor in 1954-55 to win back-to-back California Amateur titles.
Also advancing today were 2006 California Amateur champion Jordan Nasser of Anaheim Hills and 1994 medalist and champion Steve Woods of Cupertino.
Among those who failed to move on were1999 California Amateur champion Tim Hogarth of Northridge, 2005 state am winner Don DuBois of Newport Beach and last year’s runner-up, Joe Greiner of Saugus.
