BURBANK, June 17 -- For the first time in three years, the Northern California Golf Association was victorious in its efforts to regain the team title as it topped the Southern California squad by one stroke, 721-722, in the Roger Lapham Challenge Cup at the California Amateur Championship today.
After shooting a 3-under-par 357 at the par-72 Oakmont CC yesterday, the North team came into the final round at Lakeside GC with an eight-shot lead. Randy Haag (72), Ryan Hallisey (73), Scott Hardy (77), Jeff Burda (72), Martin Trainer (76), and Taylor Travis (71) shot a 14-over-par 364 at the par-70 course and finished with an 11-over-par 721 overall, with the low five of six individual scores counting toward the total. The NCGA now has a 7-12 overall record in the annual team challenge, which is contested over the state amateur's two rounds of stroke play.
The SCGA rallied at Lakeside but fell short in the end. 2007 California Amateur Champion Josh Anderson led the South team with a 4-under-par 68, whole three-time SCGA Amateur runner-up Brian Edick and 2007 SCGA Amateur Champion Brett Kanda each shot 1-under 71 in the effort; Anderson and Edick both eagled the 468-yard par-5 second hole.
